FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – July 16, 2016
Bowen Byram named 2016 HockeyNow Alberta Minor Hockey Player of the Year
MISSISSAUGA, ONT. – HockeyNow is excited to announce Bowen Byram, Lethbridge Val Matteotti Golden Hawks Captain and Vancouver Giants Prospect, is the winner of the 2016 HockeyNow Alberta Minor Hockey Player of the Year Award, presented by SportChek.
Defenceman Byram, 15, stood out because of his amazing performance with the Golden Hawks this past season, where he earned 22 goals and 37 assists in 34 regular season games, with another 12 points in 12 playoff games, and the top scoring position on his team.
HockeyNow’s Minor Hockey Player of the Year program is in its 17th year in B.C. and third year in Alberta and Ontario. Twelve NHL draftees and players have won the prestigious award since 2000, including two-time Stanley Cup champion Colin Fraser, Gilbert Brule, Karl Alzner, Stefan Elliott and 2011 first overall pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, to name a few.
“This is a hockey award but we want people and players to understand that because you have success in one area, you are still responsible for being a role model and a good citizen to your community, teammates, coaches, family and yourself,” said Dave Babych, former NHL defenceman and HockeyNow’s Chair of the Player of the Year selection team. “When you can have a foundation like this at this young age, the sky’s the limit—whether you play in the NHL or not.”
In order to pursue his hockey career, Byram relocated from Cranbrook to Lethbridge in 2013 to join the Golden Hawks organization. Byram will suit up with the Lethbridge AAA Hurricanes of the Alberta Major Midget League in the fall; and is set to join the Vancouver Giants in the 2017-18, after they drafted him third overall in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.
Lethbridge Head Coach Mike Dyck, a former head coach of the WHL Lethbridge Hurricanes who also worked as an assistant coach with the Giants, believes Byram definitely has what it takes to make an impact on the major junior scene.
"Bowen is a complete defenceman and he can play whatever style you want," analyzed Dyck. "He's a guy we relied on to play against the other team's top lines and shut them down. He understands how to play the angles on the opposition and he does a great job playing the body. If it's a physical game and you need to play with an edge, he can bring it. He's a competitor and he's got a bit of a mean streak to him.”
Bowen’s coaches and teachers all referred to his leadership and charisma on and off the ice.
"Bowen is a bit of a throwback in the sense that he's a very grounded kid," explained Dyck. "He understands the commitment and accountability it takes to play the game at the next level. At the same time, he also has a great sense of humour and he's a bit of a magnet when it comes to his teammates. He's a real leader and mixes that in with a great personality which makes him a very popular guy in the dressing room.”
And what does the charismatic defenceman have to say about his Player of the Year honours?
"It's pretty cool to get the recognition and it's a tough award to win with all the great players we have in Alberta,” said Byram. “It was kind of surreal when I got the phone call telling me I'd won it."
“Surreal” is also the adjective that players used to describe their once-of-a-lifetime experience of being fitted with new gear from head to toe courtesy of our award partners, SportChek. SportChek teamed up with HockeyNow for the second year running to provide each player with new equipment and apparel from head to toe.
HockeyNow is thrilled about our continued partnership with SportChek and to be able to present the HockeyNow Minor Hockey Player of the Year Award to promising young players like Bowen Byram.
